In Theros, the pantheon of gods vies for undying devotion among their mortal subjects. But in the Underworld, there is only one master: the Lord of the Dead. Break free from death’s shackles as a hero reborn. Choose your god and fight in their name… or forge a destiny all your own.https://magic.wizards.com/en/products/TherosBeyondDeath
Theros Beyond Death has two returning mechanics in Constellation and Devotion while introducing one new mechanic, Escape. There is a heavy emphasis on Enchantment cards, including the return of Saga cards (first introduced in the Dominaria) as well as a number of powerful God cards.
The new Escape mechanic allows players to break cards out of the underworld! A spell with Escape on it can be cast from the graveyard for it’s Escape cost, this includes exiling other cards from your graveyard. Sometimes, the cards even get a bonus for being cast with Escape! The neat thing about Escape is if you can keep paying the card’s Escape cost, it can keep returning to the battlefield.
Cards with Constellation have beneficial things happen when they are played or when you play another enchantment. When Constellation cards were first introduced in the Journey into Nyx set, the mechanic was only seen on cards that were enchantments. In Theros Beyond Death, we’ll see some cards that have Constellation but are not enchantments themselves!
Devotion is back! Devotion looks at how many of the colored mana symbols are on your side of the field and give you a more powerful effect based on that number. As of this post we don’t know every card that will be in the set but one fan-favorite Devotion card will be making a return in Theros Beyond Death. That card is Gray Merchant of Asphodel also (affectionately) known as Gary.
Our next post will cover information for upcoming events and products featuring the new set! This includes prerelease and release events.
